Petricia Butu

Internationally Educated Nurse

"I believe every dream comes with wings, but it is up to us to make it fly. My dream is to become a Registered Nurse (RN) here in Alberta" - says Petrica Butu, an internationally educated nurse from Romania. Petrica is currently taking courses at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton and recently completed the Bridge to Canadian Nursing Program at Mount Royal University in Calgary.

Once she finishes her coursework, Petrica is planning to write the Canadian Registered Nurses Exam (CRNE) which will allow her to become a Registered Nurse in Alberta. She believes the knowledge and techniques she learned as a past participant of Directions' CRNE study group, will help her succeed in the exam.

"The information I obtained about the structure of the exam, the assessments accomplished during the study group sessions and the interactions among study group members helped me become more comfortable with writing a multiple choice exam." As well, Petrica feels her career coach helped her better understand the Canadian way of thinking and to be more confident about writing the exam.

"The licensing process for internationally educated nurses takes time, effort and personal and family sacrifices, but it’s worth it.

There are several challenges to face and overcome: a different language, a different culture and a different job environment. My ultimate goal is to work as a licensed nurse in Calgary."
