Who is the licensing body responsible for Engineering Technologists in Alberta?

Certification with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) is voluntary. You may work in the field without being certified by ASET; however, you cannot call yourself a Technologist in Training (T.T.), Certified Technician (C.Tech.), Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.), Registered Engineering Technologist (R.E.T.), nor Professional Engineering Technologist (P.Tech.) unless you are registered with ASET.

What are the certification requirements for internationally educated Engineering Technologists?

Internationally educated Engineering Technologists must meet the same requirements as Canadian educated applicants. Internationally educated Engineering Technologists must 

1. Hold a minimum of a two-year diploma from an applied science, engineering or information technology program. An assessment of credentials by the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or another assessment service with membership in the Alliance of Credential Evaluation Services is required. 

2. Meet the minimum English requirements. Visit the Coming to Alberta page on the ASET website for full details. 

3. Be legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or a valid work permit). 

4. Completion of a Competency Report, demonstrating that you meet at least 5 discipline-specific competencies. 

5. Completion of a minimum of 2 years of experience in the discipline of your education (or 4 years if your education is in a different discipline), confirmed by at least 3 references

6. Write and pass the ASET Professional Practice Exam. 

7. Write and pass the ASET Certification Exam.

8. Demonstration of good character and reputation.

What are the educational requirements for Engineering Technologists in Alberta?

Note: Licensing bodies compare international education and experience to Canadian standards. 

In Alberta, Engineering Technologists must hold a minimum of a two-year diploma from a technical program. 

In Alberta, the following institutions offer programs in engineering technology: 

SAIT Polytechnic (SAIT) in Calgary – Diploma 

Red Deer College in Red Deer – Diploma 

Lethbridge College in Lethbridge - Diploma 

University of Alberta in Edmonton – Degree 

University of Calgary in Calgary – Degree

What are the accepted English language proficiency tests and where can I be tested?

Applicants must successfully achieve the required passing score on one of the ASET approved English Language Tests. These tests include

NOTE: Applicants who are unable to provide test results may provide ASET with a handwritten letter in which the applicant describes how he or she became competent in the English language. The letter should be at least one page in length (300 words minimum) and should be signed by the applicant's supervisor. The ASET Board of Examiners will review your letter along with comments from your professional references to confirm your English language proficiency.  

Applicants who are graduates of an academic program delivered in English are exempt from this requirement.
