What are the requirements for internationally educated Paralegals / Legal Assistants?

There is no licensing authority to regulate the profession of Paralegal in Alberta. 

The Alberta Association of Professional Paralegals (AAPP) is a voluntary association that provides support and networking for Paralegals and Legal Assistants.

What are the educational requirements for Paralegals in Alberta?

Note: Professional associations compare international education and experience to Canadian standards.

Paralegals need related post-secondary education or equivalent experience. Strong command of English, keyboarding, writing, editing, word processing and computer skills are required. 

In Alberta, the following institutions offer related two-year diploma programs. 

Bow Valley College in Calgary 

CDI College of Business, Technology and Healthcare, a private vocational school in Calgary and Edmonton 

Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton 

Red Deer College in Red Deer 

Reeves College , a private vocational school in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Lloydminster 

SAIT Polytechnic (SAIT) in Calgary 


What are the accepted English language proficiency tests and where can I be tested?

Because Paralegals and Legal Assistants are not regulated professions, there are no English requirements; however, Paralegals and Legal Assistants must understand legal terms, as well as have a high level of English in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in order to be successful in the profession.
