Who is responsible for licensing Real Estate Appraisers in Alberta?
In Alberta, to call yourself a third-party Real Estate Appraiser, you must be licensed by the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA).
If you are employed as a Real Estate Appraiser in a company where you are performing appraisals on properties belonging to the company’s clients, you must be licensed.
If you are directly employed as a Real Estate Appraiser in a company where you are appraising only that company’s properties, you do not have to be licensed.
What are the licensing requirements for internationally educated Real Estate Appraisers?
Internationally educated Real Estate Appraisers must follow the same process to become a Real Estate Appraiser as New Appraiser. The only exceptions to this rule are listed on the Coming from Another Jurisdiction page on the Real Estate Council of Alberta website.
Internationally educated Real Estate Appraisers must:
- Meet the Eligibility Criteria
- Complete the training as identified on the RECA Education Requirements - Real Estate Appraisal web page
- Submit a Certified Criminal Record Check from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)
- Provide a Letter of Good Standing as a member of one of the accepted real estate appraisal associations (listed below)
- Apply to RECA

What are the educational requirements for Real Estate Appraisers in Alberta?
In Alberta, once an individual has become a member of one of the accepted real estate appraisal associations (listed below), to become licensed, they must complete the Introduction to Real Estate Appraisal in Alberta course offered by RECA.
What are the accepted English language proficiency tests and where can I be tested?

What resources and supports are available for internationally educated Real Estate Appraisers?
